Parks

Visiting area parks and walking trails is a great way to get some fresh air and exercise in the same trip. There are numerous parks surrounding The Paddock area and below you will find some details on each.

  • William Kain Park
    • Location: 274 Hess Farm Rd, York PA 17407
    • Details: Consists of 1,637 acres and 2 lakes, Lake Williams (220 acres) and Lake Redman (290 acres). Features fishing, boating and limited hunting areas, horseshoe pits, a volleyball court, playground, pavilion rentals and over 12 miles of multi-use trails where horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking are permitted.
  • Rocky Ridge Park
    • Location: 3699 Deininger Road, York PA 17406
    • Details: Ninety percent of the 750-acre Rocky Ridge Par is a mature oak forest. More than 12 miles of trails are open to hikers, horseback riders and mountain bikers. There are two observation decks located in the park. One deck is located on the north side of the park and offers a panoramic view of the Susquehanna Valley (ADA accessible). The other deck is located on the south side and offers a view of the York Valley.
  • John C. Rudy Park
    • Location: 400 Mundis Race Road, York PA17406
    • Details: The 150-acre park features pavilions, sports fields, horseshoe pits, volleyball courts, recreational space, cross-country running trail, BMX track and the popular Canine Meadows Off-Leash Dog Area.
  • Richard M. Nixon Park
    • Location: 5922 Nixon Dr., York PA 17403
    • Details: Features a 14,000-square-foot nature center nestled on 187 acres of meadow, woodland and aquatic habitats that support a wide variety of plant and animal life. The nature center also hosts guided nature walks and other themed programs throughout the year.

More ways to stay active

Aside from the parks in the area, golfing is another way to stay active and enjoy the outdoors, and there are many golf clubs and courses nearby.

If golfing isn’t your cup of tea, you can always opt for staying active by visiting a gym or fitness center.

  • The YMCA has a wide range of programs for seniors that incorporate many different ways to stay active, such as aquatics and yoga.
  • You can also participate in the York County Senior Games if you’re in the competitive spirit. The Senior Games promote healthy lifestyles and fitness for York County men and women over the age of 50 through competitive activities.

Giving back

Volunteering is also a way to connect and give back to the community.

  • Get involved with a friends group to support a local park, museum, or other area of interest. These friends groups donate their time in support of York County Parks to enhance the quality of community life.
  • If you are an animal lover, consider volunteering at the York County SPCA.
  • The Volunteer Center of United Way of York has an online-based program called Get Connected that can help you find opportunities that best match your interests. You can choose from more than 160 nonprofit organizations.
